About Mariana:
Mariana Ruiz-Temple has served as the State Fire Marshal since September 2020. She directs the agency's fire programs, including fire code development and enforcement, fire investigation, fire data collection and analysis, the Community Right to Know Program, Hazmat Response Teams, community wildfire risk reduction, fire safety education and information, youth education, and the regulation of the fireworks, explosives, propane, and non-retail gasoline dispensing industries. Her responsibilities include administering the Oregon State Fire Service Mobilization Plan, Oregon Fire Mutual Aid System, and the State Fire Marshal's Incident Management Teams. She develops and implements organizational planning and policies and establishes goals in partnership with the two Chief Deputy State Fire Marshals. Mariana collaboratively facilitates the development of proposed legislation affecting fire protection and the Oregon fire service. In addition, she is responsible for mobilizing structural resources for wildfires and other all-hazard incidents throughout the state and the Agency Operations Center (AOC).
Before her current position, she served as the Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal beginning in November 2014. There, she supervised the professional management staff comprising the 4 Divisions of OSFM: Fire & Life Safety Services, Fire & Life Safety Education, Emergency Response Services, and Regulatory Services. Each division's portfolio significantly impacts statewide management policies relating to fire, life safety, and hazardous materials. In addition, as the Assistant Chief Deputy over the Emergency Response Branch between 2007-2014, Mariana oversaw the Community Right-to-Know program, 3 State Incident Management Teams (IMTs), 13 Regional Hazardous Materials Response teams, and the Local Emergency Planning Committees.
Throughout her career at Oregon State Fire Marshal, she has focused on partnerships, collaboration, and cultivating relationships with the Oregon fire service and other response agencies throughout the state. She has led the Oregon Fire Service, promoting the state's mutual aid system, bolstering response tools and capacity, and preparedness throughout the system. Mariana remains focused on creating systems and programs that build capacity for the Oregon Fire Service and protect Oregonians.
Ruiz-Temple is a member of the National Association of State Fire Marshals, the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association, and the Governor's Fire Service Policy Council. Mariana also serves on the Western Fire Chief's Association Wildfire Policy Committee and has served as the Vice-President of the National Association of the SARA Title III Public Officials. Additionally, she serves as the Chair of the IAFC Emergency Management Committee. Recently, Ruiz-Temple served as the state fire response rep to the Biden-Harris Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission. From 2007 to 2020, she served on the Pacific Northwest Coordinating Group Steering Committee.
