Guest Speaker: Jim Yon, Linn County Sheriff
Jim Yon was appointed as the 40th Linn County Sheriff by the Linn County Board of Commissioners on June 1, 2018 to fulfill the remainder of Retired Sheriff Bruce Riley’s term. Yon was elected as Sheriff by the citizens of Linn County on November 6, 2018 and began his 4-year term in January 2019.
Sheriff Yon has been a member of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office for over 26 years. He has served as a resident deputy, detective, corporal, 1st Sergeant, Detective 1st Sergeant, Support Services Captain, Undersheriff and Sheriff.
In his years of service, he has held every level of leadership, worked in three different divisions and was a longtime member of the dive team. He has a broad range of experience from working criminal patrol, managing a 911 center to preparing the office budget.
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office covers over 2300 square miles and has an annual budget of roughly 35 million dollars. The Sheriff’s Office employs 190 full time employees.
Sheriff Yon earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Western Oregon State College in Law Enforcement. Sheriff Yon holds his Middle Management Certificate from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. He has completed the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association Command College. He also attended Law Enforcement Executive Development put on by the FBI in Virginia.
Sheriff Yon has been married to his wife, Angie, for 25 years and has two adult children. He enjoys sports, camping and the outdoors. He is convinced that he is the worst hunter and fisherman in the State of Oregon, but keeps trying anyways.
