"A Decade of Progress"
Guest Speaker:
Greg Hamann
President, Linn-Benton Community College
After serving 10 years as one of the longest-serving community college presidents in Oregon, Greg Hamann is retiring at the end of this academic year.
Dr. Greg Hamann joined Linn-Benton Community College as its sixth president in 2010. Through engagement with the LBCC community and college partners, Dr. Hamann is leading the college in its commitment to student success and completion.
Under President Hamann's leadership, LBCC was selected as one of 30 community colleges nationwide to participate in the American Association of Community College's Pathways Initiative to improve student completion rates. The college's resulting "Guided Pathways" initiative, which provides a clear road map for students to earn degrees, now serves as a model for other institutions throughout Oregon.
In addition, Hamann's work on freedom of expression was recently recognized by the Heterodox Academy, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of research and education in higher education. LBCC is currently the only community college in the nation to be included as a member of this academy, joining the likes of Purdue, Columbia, UC-Berkeley and other prestigious universities.
Hamann's advocacy for diversity, equity and inclusion has also extended to many new initiatives at LBCC including the Affordability initiative, which provides emergency funds for marginalized students. He is also a leader in forging new avenues for education within Oregon?s prisons, and is an advocate for challenging the idea of ?dead ends? ? so that everyone has an opportunity to succeed.
Community Relationships and Advocacy
Hamann is a champion of community collaboration, bringing the college together with local chambers of commerce, industry leaders, school superintendents, service clubs, and more to create unique solutions to local challenges. The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce played a critical role in the formation of the Pipeline program, an excellent example of this work ? a unique economic and workforce collaboration between local businesses, city and county leaders, area school districts and LBCC to provide education and pathways that lead to jobs in the region.
In 2014, Hamann successfully led the passage of a bond measure, which provided funds to increase capacity for healthcare and career technical education programs and expand the LBCC Benton Center in Corvallis. Hamann oversaw the opening of three state-of-the-art education facilities in Lebanon; the Advanced Transportation Technology Center, the Heavy Equipment Diesel Center, and the Healthcare Occupation Center. In addition, he oversaw the opening of the newly-renovated Career Technical Education programs, which modernized and expanded capacity for Machine Tool, Non-destructive Testing, Mechatronics, and Welding programs, and created an inviting public entry to the north side of campus.
Hamann's partnerships with university leaders have resulted in deepening of LBCC's 20-plus year relationship with Oregon State University, and forging a new degree partnership with Western Oregon University, providing students with a stronger path to a four-year degree.
Hamann has also been a powerful voice for the value of community colleges at the state and national levels. His advocacy has included serving on Oregon?s Quality Education Commission, on the Governor?s Reentry Council, and on the Department of Corrections Reentry Council. Hamann also served on numerous task forces to increase education?s effectiveness and help improve the quality of life for all Oregonians.
Hamann is past board chair of the Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis, and a board member of the Albany Chamber of Commerce. At the National level, Hamann is a former director of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Board of Directors, a member of the Oversight Board for the Voluntary Framework for Accountability (VFA), and a member of the President's Advisory Council to the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), and is past chair of the Board for the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3).
Recognition
In 2017, Dr. Hamann was honored with the "Chair's Award" by the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments, recognizing his leadership in promoting regional economic development. In 2018, he was honored with the Howard Cherry Outstanding Community College Administrator by the Oregon Community College Association for his commitment and leadership in supporting student success. In 2015 and then again in 2019, Hamann received the Pacesetter Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for his leadership and support in the area of college communications and marketing.
Prior to LBCC, Dr. Hamann was president at Clatsop Community College in Astoria, Oregon for seven years, and as the Chief Finance and Operations Officer at Northwest College in Wyoming. Hamann also served in a variety of administrative roles at two private 4-year institutions; Whitworth University in Washington, and Bethel University in Minnesota, and he taught middle-school.
Hamann has a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Gonzaga University, a master?s in Counseling Psychology from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and bachelor's degrees in both Psychology and Social Studies Education from the University of Minnesota.
